Our Story

A family-owned winery making wines from grapes grown exclusively in New Mexico.

Since 2005, Joseph Martinez, winemaker and founder of El Alamo Winery, has been transforming grapes into some of the best wines in Northern New Mexico.

As a 37 year retired weapons engineer that worked at Los Alamos National Laboratory, Joseph has taken a science-based approach to his winemaking. In combination with an artistic flair and intuitive talent, this approach to winemaking has resulted in unique and high-quality award winning wines.

El Alamo Winery currently offers twenty one different styles of wine that range from dry reds to crisp whites. Also available is the El Alamo signature wine, Bourbon-Aged Baco Noir—a unique varietal aged in bourbon barrels that offer a one-of-a-kind flavor not available anywhere else in New Mexico.

The El Alamo vineyard was started in 2012 with 100 vines of red Baco Noir grapes.  Over the course of 2013 and 2014 an additional 800 Baco Noir vines were planted along with 400 white Riesling vines in the 2-acre vineyard. We also source grapes from NM Vineyards located in Deming, NM to round out our tasting menu.

El Alamo Winery is located in the small community of Alcalde, NM, 40 miles north of Santa Fe and 35 miles south of Taos just off NM Hwy 68.  Click here for directions.

Friends and family have been enjoying El Alamo wines for years, and we’re excited to be able to share our wines with wine lovers from across the country. No matter the wine style, each El Alamo bottle contains a touch of Joseph’s passion for winemaking.

From vine to wine, taste the passion.
